Politics, Philosophy, Culture: Interviews and Other Writings, 1977-1984
Published in Paperback by Routledge (April, 1990)
Authors: Michel Foucault, Lawrence D. Kritzman, and Alan Sheridan
Average review score:

Great finetuning of Foucault
This is great for general reading on Foucault. It does a great job tying together a lot of the things Foucault tried to say in his books. If you're a policy debater trying to become a Foucault buff, get this book. The chapter on critique does an excellent job drawing the distinction between criticism and transformation. It's good stuff :)

Portugal 1001 Sights: An Archaeological and Historical Guide
Published in Paperback by University of Calgary Press (March, 1995)
Authors: James M. Anderson and M. Sheridan Lea
Average review score:

A portuguese view
As an interested portuguese, I must say that I learned a lot, that I got curious, that I followed directions that worked. I should also say that sometimes the authors incurr in minor misspellings. However, this is a book I would promptly advise to anyone seeking for the old european flair. Very well done!

The practical stylist
Published in Unknown Binding by Harper & Row ()
Author: Sheridan Warner Baker
Average review score:

One of the best books I've ever used in college-- and after!
I have the 3rd edition and was checking to see what newer edition there might be. I am surprised there is no review of this book, so allow me to fill you in! We can all put words on paper, but how do you make a plan for an effect essay? A plan is more than an outline, it is a flow. There is a natural way to reach an audience than you might include in an outline, but cannot come from merely using an outline. This book will help you very well with that, and with the styling of sentences. I have three "college handbooks" of writing, none of which help me at the creative stage of planning an essay. I recently had to take some scholastic entrance exams that involved writing essays. Even 25 years after completing my freshman english classes, I still have Baker's "The Practical Stylist". In just half an hour of review, it all came back to me. As I sat there in the exam with the clock ticking, I was very comfortable in my writing. I knew what I needed to accomplish and how to do it. Thank you, Sheridan Baker, for your timeless instruction. (If you wonder how the book might have changed from the 3rd to 8th editions, it has enlarged. What was a small chapter 1 now is 2 chapters. The core material is still there, starting at chapter 3.)

Rehearsal from Shakespeare to Sheridan
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (July, 2000)
Author: Tiffany Stern
Average review score:

Shakespeare's players come to life
Tiffany Stern's groundbreaking book will revolutionise your view of Shakespeare in a fascinating discussion of day to day life in the theatre. Read how actors had copies only of their own parts - many didn't know the story of the whole play until performance. Learn about ad libbing clowns and heroines who fall in love, literally, on cue. The Shakespearean sections combine ingenious archival research (from coal bills to prompt books) with sensitive textual analysis. The Restoration and seventeenth century sections are alive with comic anecdote and original insight, not to mention Garrick's mechanical wig. This book will change your perceptions of drama in the past, but will also raise questions about theatrical practice today. Invaluable to all who love the theatre.

The School for Scandal and Other Plays
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (March, 1989)
Authors: Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Eric S. Rump
Average review score:

Hilarious!
This edition includes three of Sheridan's most famous works. "The Rivals" and "The Critic" are both fine plays, but the best by far is "The School for Scandal", a droll farce which lampoons gossip-mongers. The high point of the play is the famous "screen scene", in which one character after another takes refuge behind a screen to eavesdrop. The humor is sharp but never bitter, and the characters are wholly believable. It is easy to see why this play is still being performed after two hundred years.

Second Choices (Nikki Sheridan Series, 6)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (December, 2000)
Author: Shirley Brinkerhoff
Average review score:

Wonderful addition to the series
This was an awesome book! In order for it to make sense, you have to read all the other books in the series first, though. What made it so good? First of all, it was very up to date. This book showed how violence is becoming very present in the world. Even the small town Nikki lives experiences threats and violence in the school. This added both a thrilling dimension as well as the feeling that the author is not ignoring modern problems. Second, the reader finally gets to meet T.J, the father of Nikki's baby. He was totally different than I expected, and Nikki's struggles with how to face- and forgive- him were very obvious. Finally, Nikki has to determine, or rather redefine, her relationship with Jeff. When her grandparents become concerned about them, and her grades and other activities begin to reflect how she chooses her priorities, it's clear that she has to change something. I don't know if this is the last book in the series or not, but if it is, it is a very good conclusion when everything comes together at the end. However, a sequel wouldn't be completely impossible. There's still more that could be written about Jeff, and it would be nice to hear from T.J. again, then there's Hollis...

I couldn't find a flaw in this book. Over the entire series the reader becomes very close to Nikki and can feel her trouble. It's a wonderful series to read, and one I would highly recommend to any teenage girl who loves to read.

An Excellent Resource!
This work is a "must have" for anyone with an interest in contemporary portrayals of Native American culture! Sheridan's Nightingale: The Story of Elizabeth Linley
Published in Hardcover by Allison & Busby (January, 1998)
Author: Alan Chedzoy
Average review score:

orsaylady
I love this book!! It was very refreshing to find a book on Elizabeth Linley, instead of her more famous husband, Richard Brinsley Sheridan.

Elizabeth was truly a shining musical star of her generation until her marriage to Sheridan cut short her career. Her incredible beauty also shows through in Gainsborough paintings of the period.

I bought the book knowing Elizabeth's life was not a happy-ending type read but a Georgian life full of ups and downs.

Sheridan's Rain
Published in Paperback by Soho Press, Inc. (April, 1995)
Author: Al Karasa
Average review score:

Sheridan's Rain As I See It
The best piece of fiction I've ever read about sports car racing. Written by an author who obviously knows what he is talking about. A more accurate treatment of the subject would be hard to find. The hard-hitting story line and an array of strong, fascinating and varied characters carries the reader along at the speed of the racing cars. Al Karasa's Sherridan's Rain is a great read not only for sports fiction lovers and racing fans, but for anyone who enjoys a well written, thoroughly researched and authoritative treatment of an unusual subject in modern fiction. As the book is out of print, I had the good fortune to discover it is still available directly from the author (signed copy, no less). E-mail him at belgate@juno.com
